Keep in mind

A shared screenshot is a starting point for checking the source.

Go back to the original

Look for the organisation or author behind a document. Where possible, read the original publication rather than a cropped image or someone else’s summary. Check for a publication date, updates and links to supporting evidence.

Understand the purpose

Ask who pays for the information and whether it aims to inform, sell or persuade. Attractive presentation and confident language do not establish reliability.

Record what is missing

Keep a short note of unanswered questions. If you cannot establish authorship, date or supporting evidence, retain that uncertainty when discussing the document. Compare its claims with other reliable sources.
